Origin and Early Application Development of Manual Chain Hoists
As an important prototype of modern stage machinery, the technological evolution of the manual chain hand hoist is deeply rooted in humanity's exploration of "controllable hoisting" needs. Tracing its origins, primitive hoisting devices already appeared in the open-air theaters of ancient Greece and Rome. To create dramatic effects such as "the descent of gods" and "the rise and fall of clouds" in mythological plays, craftsmen at that time threaded tough linen ropes through wooden pulleys fixed to the wooden beams of the theater's dome. With the coordinated effort of several slaves or laborers pulling the ropes, these devices enabled the lifting and lowering of divine statue props and simple stage sets.
Although lacking complex mechanical structures, these primitive devices already embodied the core principles of "pulley-based labor saving" and "manual operation." Particularly in the gladiatorial performances of ancient Roman amphitheaters, they were also used to quickly lift and lower metal gates and stage platforms. Despite relying on human coordination for operational precision, they could already meet the simple stage scheduling needs of the time, laying the original foundation for stage hoisting technology.
